A comprehensive overview of randomized controlled trials of psychodynamic psychotherapies

Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) are currently considered ‘gold standard’ for evaluating psychosocial interventions, including psychodynamic psychotherapies (PDTs). The aim of this review is to summarize all available RCTs involving PDTs. A thorough search yielded 298 studies published between 1967 and 2022. number has increased over time with 123 (41.2%) in the last 10 years. Most have been conducted western countries, PDTs brief duration (<40 sessions) adults mood (k = 67, 22.5%), psychosomatic 38, 12.8%), anxiety 35, 11.7%), or personality disorders 29, 9.7%). utilized comparative 233, 78.2%), additive 33, 11.1%), parametric 30, 10.1%) dismantling designs 2, 0.7%) includes a total 374 comparisons. Categorization outcomes suggests that typically outperforms inactive controls, while comparisons active treatments, inclugding Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT), indicate no statistical difference. While evidence-base growing, there still major limitations many research questions yet be addressed. There pressing need disseminating existing policy makers general public, as well integrating findings training curriculums.
